Janice Byrne is a traditionally trained goldsmith. She has worked in many aspects of the Irish jewellery trade for over 25 years. She’s been self employed for 13 years now.
In recent years Janice has built a reputation for making stunning one of a kind alternative engagement and wedding rings using rare and unusual precious and semi precious gemstones. She has a wonderful collection or ready to wear pieces too that are mostly inspired by the wonderful woodlands and forests of Ireland. Janice takes great pride in her work and use of recycled metal and sustainable practices whenever possible.
A typical day for me is working through the many bespoke orders on my bench, taking old preloved jewellery apart and rebuilding it into new family heirlooms. Or maybe a stunning one of a kind engagement ring.
Although I spend much of the day at the bench, I do allocate some time in the afternoon to answer emails and messages, fill online orders and wrapping and packing orders.
Put in the ground work, learn the discipline from reliable and experienced mentors, research, and start off small, don't try to go too big too quickly.

What do you like least about your work?
The thing i like least would be admin, it takes me away from my happy place on the bench.
Wash my hands and face. You’d be surprised how filthy it gets when working with metal.
What do you listen to?
Everything and anything, rock, dance, world music, but have really been enjoying opera and classical music lately.
What’s your favourite time of the day?
Bench time. I love sitting at the bench making pieces.
What other maker in your discipline do you most look up to?
I absolutely love pottery but have also recently taken up embroidery and it absolutely fascinates me.
How do you start your day?
I start my day with a nice brisk walk with my dogs, Roxy, Lulu & Luna.
