As part of Irish Design Week 2024, an industrial design workshop and presentation will be held in collaboration with jeweller Breda Haugh, The Design Tower, Trinity East, and Unit18 (Trinity College Dublin’s community space).
In the early twentieth century, many trade -craft manufacturers operated in Pearse Street and surrounding area, including art metalwork, stone carvers and jewellers etc. Recent Industries were Hammond Lane foundry, McCairns Motors and Boland’s Mills etc.
This event will commemorate product design and trade craft skills of the area from the 1930s and reflect on their applications today.
Building on last year’s event, we realised there was a greater demand for audience interaction and storytelling.
The scene will be set for this storytelling with a brief introduction reflecting on trade crafts and how design permeated every aspect of the products made. This will be followed by a presentation by Dublin City Council Historian in Residence, Dr Mary Muldowney who will speak on Lost Industries from Dublin, 1960s-1990s.
Next through welcoming and encouraging storytelling from people who worked across a range of industries locally and elsewhere we will help preserve these histories.
The event will conclude with an informal reception.
