The IQ (Interlocking Quadrilaterals) light™ system celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, having been invented by Danish designer Holger Strøm during his residency at the Kilkenny Design Workshops (KDW).
Originally created for a Christmas display using triangular modules, the design evolved into a modular system based on a rhomboid shape that could harness the necessary tension needed to hold the lamps together.
This single shape linked together allows for the construction of lamps in various shapes and sizes.
Through the 70s it was manufactured by Kilkenny Illuminations Ltd, who sold around 20,000 lights worldwide.

Academy Award-nominated films, The Secret of Kells (2009), Song of the Sea (2015) and WolfWalkers (2020), make up the Irish Folklore Trilogy created by Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon.
All three films weave folklore and mythology into the narrative, creating a deep connection between the characters, their adventures and the rich cultural heritage of Ireland, showcasing Irish folklore’s enduring relevance in contemporary storytelling.
This exhibition presents a selection of pivotal scenes from the films alongside books exploring the making of each film, demonstrating the unique visual style and exquisitely handcrafted animation which has garnered the studio international acclaim and multiple awards.
