The Harrowphone

Time

The Harrowphone is a new experimental instrument, and interactive audio installation, created by Edu Prado using old harrow discs. Each disc wears down differently throughout its life, while used in a harrow tractor in agriculture to smooth the fields for plantation, bringing them to unique sizes and therefore each disc has a slight different pitch, making varied sounds.

The installation provokes thoughts about sustainability and circular design, recycling metal discs used in a farming context. It is rooted the concept of “reaping what we sow”, creating an immersive experience that evolves in real-time from the discs’ metallic sounds.

As you play, the microphones capture the Harrowphone’s sounds, process them and play them back surrounding the space. As the sound world evolves, you’re invited to try it out or continue the sowing, plant your sound seeds and hear them grow around you!
